Garage Door Off Track Repair

How a door comes off the track

  • Impact from a vehicle, a bin or a bicycle against the track or door
  • A seized or broken roller dragging and jumping the rail
  • A broken cable or spring letting one side drop
  • A track pulled out of plumb as the framing shifted
  • An opener forced against a jammed door, bending the track further

Do not force the door back

When a door is off the track, the panels are usually still hanging on the opener arm and the remaining rollers. Pushing, pulling or running the opener in that state bends the track, cracks the bottom section and can bring the door down on whoever is standing beneath it. Secure the area and leave the door as it is.

If the door is hanging and the garage is accessible, keep people, pets and vehicles out of the opening until it has been made safe.

What we do

  • Support and stabilise the door before any work begins
  • Assess the track, rollers, cables and springs for the cause, not just the symptom
  • Realign and re-plumb sound track, or replace damaged sections with matched profile
  • Replace seized or broken rollers and any bent hinges
  • Re-engage the door, rebalance it and set the travel and reversal correctly

Finding the cause, not just resetting the door

A door that came off the track because a car bumped it usually needs track and rollers, and will stay fixed. A door that came off the track on its own is telling you something else failed first — a cable, a spring, a worn roller or a track that has slowly drifted out of alignment. Resetting the door without correcting that guarantees a repeat.

  4. Repair and test

The work is completed, then the door is balanced and cycled to verify safe, quiet operation from the wall control and the remote.

FAQ

Garage Door Off Track Repair — common questions

Can I fix a garage door that is off track myself?
We would not recommend it. An off-track door is under spring tension and is supported only by the remaining hardware. It can come down unexpectedly and the springs can release stored energy with little warning. This is one of the few garage door jobs where doing it yourself genuinely risks injury.
The door is off track but the opener still runs. Should I keep using it?
No. Running the opener against a door that is out of its track bends the track, twists the door sections and loads the opener carriage far beyond its design. Turn the opener off and leave the door where it is.
Can bent garage door track be straightened?
Sometimes. A track that has been knocked slightly out of plumb or has a shallow bend can often be straightened and realigned. A track with a sharp kink, or one that has been bent repeatedly, should be replaced — a straightened kink never lets the rollers travel cleanly, and the door will keep jamming.
Why does my garage door keep coming off the track on one side?
A repeated derailment on one side usually means a track that is not plumb or not parallel to the door, a bent section, or a seized roller dragging on that side. Occasionally it is a cable that is not winding evenly. Repeatedly pushing the door back into place will not correct any of those.
