Broken Spring Repair

How to tell that a spring has broken

  • A loud bang from the garage, often while the door is at rest
  • The door becomes extremely heavy and will not lift by hand
  • The opener strains, hums, or lifts the door a few inches and stops
  • A visible gap in the coil of a torsion spring above the door
  • A door that hangs down on one side

Stop operating the door

A garage door is balanced by its springs. When one breaks, the full weight — typically well over a hundred pounds — transfers to the opener and to whatever is holding the door up. Running the opener in that state strips the drive gear, bends the track and, in the worst case, lets the door come down unevenly.

Take the opener out of service until the spring is replaced. If the door is stuck open, do not pull the emergency release cord.

Torsion springs and extension springs

Torsion springs mount on a shaft above the door and store energy by twisting. Extension springs run alongside the horizontal track and stretch. Torsion systems are more common on modern doors and are generally smoother and more durable; extension springs are common on older South Florida homes and fail differently.

Either way, springs are matched to the door weight and height. Fitting the wrong spring — a common shortcut — leaves the door unbalanced and unsafe even though it looks repaired.

Why springs are replaced as a pair

Two springs that were manufactured together and have cycled together wear together. When one breaks, the other is usually close behind it, and a single-spring replacement means the same failure again shortly afterwards. Replacing the pair also restores even balance across the door, which protects the track, the rollers and the opener.

Cycles, not years

Spring life is measured in cycles, not calendar time. A busy family garage opens and closes many times a day, which uses up a spring far faster than a lightly used door. Higher-cycle spring options are available and worth discussing if your garage is the main door your household uses.

Our process

Garage door service made simple

Four steps, no guesswork, and a clear explanation before any work starts.

  1. Contact us

Call or request service online. Tell us what the door is doing and where you are — that is enough to get started.

  2. Diagnose the problem

A technician evaluates the garage door, the opener and the affected components, including the counterbalance and safety system.

  3. Review the repair

We explain the recommended solution and the cost before work begins, and what happens if a part has to be ordered.

  4. Repair and test

The work is completed, then the door is balanced and cycled to verify safe, quiet operation from the wall control and the remote.

FAQ

Broken Spring Repair — common questions

What should I do if my garage door spring breaks?
Stop using the door. Unplug the opener, take the wall control out of service, and keep people and pets clear of the opening. Do not pull the emergency release cord while the door is up, and do not try to lift the door by hand — with no counterbalance it is far heavier and more dangerous than it appears. Then call and describe whether the door is up, down or part way.
Can I open a garage door with a broken spring?
You can sometimes force it, but you should not. The door is carrying its full weight, which risks injury and quickly damages the opener, the track and the door sections. If you need the car out urgently, call — getting the spring replaced is usually faster and cheaper than the damage caused by forcing the door.
How much does a garage door spring replacement cost?
Pricing depends on whether the door uses torsion or extension springs, the spring size and cycle rating, and whether one or both need replacing. We price the job for your door rather than quoting a number that will not survive contact with the actual opening. Ask for a clear figure before work begins.
Why do garage door springs break?
Almost always metal fatigue from the number of cycles the door has completed, accelerated by corrosion. In South Florida, humidity and salt air pit the spring wire and shorten its life. A well-lubricated spring in a dry garage will usually outlast a dry, corroded spring in a coastal one.
